Macro Tracking While Injured: How to Eat When You Can't Train
Being injured is the worst time to slash calories, and it's exactly when most people do it. Here's what the research says about protein, deficits and muscle loss during immobilisation.

Why the instinct to cut is wrong
The logic feels airtight. You were burning 600 kcal a session, five sessions a week. Now you’re on the sofa with your leg in a boot. Cut 600 a day, stay level, no harm done.
Two problems with that.
First, structured exercise is a smaller share of your daily burn than the tracker on your wrist suggests. For most recreationally active people, deliberate training accounts for 10-20% of total daily energy expenditure. The bigger loss when you get injured is NEAT: the walking, fidgeting, stair-climbing and general moving about. That can drop by 200-400 kcal a day on its own, and it happens whether or not you touch your macros. Second, and more important, healing is not free. Bone repair, soft tissue remodelling and the inflammatory response all cost energy. So your maintenance falls, but not by the full amount you removed from your training log.
The practical version: estimate your new maintenance as roughly 10-15% below your pre-injury number, not 25-30%.
The protein case, which is the whole ballgame
Immobilised muscle develops what researchers call anabolic resistance. It stops responding properly to protein. The same 25 g dose that would have triggered a decent muscle protein synthesis response in a trained limb produces a blunted one in a limb that hasn’t moved in ten days.
The response to a less sensitive system is a stronger signal, not a weaker one.
How much

That is a lot of protein for someone who isn’t hungry, which is the honest difficulty here. Appetite often drops during injury, partly from reduced activity and partly from painkillers. How to spread it

If you only change one thing during your recovery, make it breakfast. It’s the meal people most reliably under-protein, and it’s the longest gap you’ve got. Leucine is the amino acid that flips the switch on muscle protein synthesis, and the threshold for the response is around 2.5-3 g per meal. Whey, dairy, eggs, meat and fish all clear it comfortably at a 25-30 g protein serving. Plant proteins are lower in leucine, so if you’re vegan, run the higher end of the protein range and lean on soy and pea blends, and check vegan high-protein meals for combinations that hit the threshold without animal sources.

Treat it as optional, and note that collagen is poor-quality protein for muscle purposes. Count it separately from your protein target, not towards it.
Setting your actual numbers
Here’s the sequence I’d use.
Work out injured maintenance. Take your pre-injury maintenance and cut 10-15%. If you were eating 2,600 kcal to hold weight, call it 2,250-2,350.
Decide your goal honestly. For most injuries lasting under eight weeks, maintenance is the right call. If you’re carrying weight you genuinely want to lose and the injury is long-term, a modest deficit of 250-400 kcal is defensible. Deeper than 500 kcal below maintenance and you’re trading healing speed for scale movement, which is a bad trade when you’re already sidelined. Set protein first. 2.0-2.2 g/kg, locked. This is not the flexible number.
Set fat next. 0.8-1.0 g/kg for hormonal function and to keep meals satisfying when volume is low.
Carbs fill the rest. They’ll be lower than usual because you’re not training, and that’s fine. Don’t go near-zero: carbohydrate spares protein for tissue repair rather than fuel, and glycogen matters again the moment you start rehab.

Tracking when you can’t be bothered
Motivation drops when there’s no training to feed. That’s normal and you should plan for it rather than pretend otherwise. Lower the friction. Photograph meals and let the app estimate rather than weighing every ingredient. Precision matters less at maintenance than in a deficit, because there’s no aggressive target to overshoot. The first month back
When you’re cleared to train, the temptation is to immediately cut, because the mirror has an opinion about the last six weeks. Resist it for four weeks.
Rebuilding lost muscle is faster than building it new, thanks to retained myonuclei, but it still requires calories. Come back at maintenance or slightly above, keep protein high, and let training do the recomposition work. Cut after the strength has come back, not before.
